Negotiations Update:

President Chalupsky, Negotiator Joe Ricke, and Field Representative Sue Vento updated the Governance Board on Negotiations. They presented the District’s and the MTA’s proposals made in the Spring and the counter-proposals that were made at the meeting with the mediator on August 19, 2003. The mediation session ended with no progress toward settlement of the 2003-2005 contract.

Sue Vento began working with the Organizing for Settlement Committee over the summer. The next meeting is on August 25, 2003. The committee will begin working on the Settlement Plan, and needs more members for this important work. We will need wide involvement of the MTA members. Probationary teachers can also be involved. The Settlement Committee will bring their work to the Governance Board. The Negotiators are working on a facts sheet to be passed out at breakfast on the opening workshop day. The committee is also looking into providing buttons for teachers to wear in support of a fair settlement.

Treasurer’s Report:

Treasurer Ricke reported that the 2002-2003 MTA Budget ended with approximately $23,000 in reserves, some of which will be used in the current budget.

New Business:

Vice-President Anderson-Simonson distributed the MTA meeting schedule. Governance Board members were also asked to sign up to attend a School Board meeting or study session. Membership Chair Mary Kay Burmesch will be sending out the membership roster soon. It is very important that each teacher verify his/her information as soon as possible. The Governance Board also reviewed the MTA Election Procedures.

Meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m. New Governance Board Member Orientation continued during lunch.

Respectfully submitted,
Mary Tingblad, MTA Secretary
