Governance Board Meeting, April 23, 2003
| In Attendance: | Mark Chalupsky, Julie Anderson-Simonson, Mary Tingblad, Joseph Ricke, Gail O’Rourke, Diane Jost, Pam Wertjes, Mark Broten, Melanie Casiday, Debra Jensen, Jan Sellman, Mark Brzezinski, Heidi Johnson, Jeri Goodspeed-Gross, Jan Nelson, J. Beowulf Boswell. |
| Absent: | Mike Cutshall. |
| Call to Order: | 4:40 p.m., by President Chalupsky. |
| Approval of Minutes: | Motion by Ricke, seconded by O'Rourke, to approve the minutes of April 9, 2003. Motion carried. |
| Teachers' Rights Report: | The
Teachers' Rights Co-Chairs were not present, as they were in a meeting with
Dr. Peterson.
President Chalupsky reported on progress regarding the teacher who was misplaced on the salary schedule a number of years ago. President Chalupsky has asked the district for a solution. If the district doesn't offer some funds, the MTA could file a grievance. |
| Treasurer's Report: | Treasurer Ricke distributed the MTA Checking Account Statement for April 6 to April 22, 2003. The Budget Committee will be meeting in early May to finalize the 2003-04 MTA Budget. Treasurer Ricke also alerted the Governance Board of the need to update the MTA computer. We should consider buying a new computer for the MTA President's use, allowing the MTA Secretary and Newsletter Editor to use the old computer. |
| New Business: | Summer Leadership Conference:
Education Minnesota is hosting a Summer Seminar, August 4-6, 2003, at the
College of St. Benedict. Members interested in attending should contact
President Chalupsky.
MHS Class Money: The Class Advisor for the Class of 1999 or 2000 contacted the MHS Teachers' Rights Representative because class money set aside for future use at MHS has disappeared. The class wants to use the $1,500 to buy benches for MHS. Three months ago, Tom Berge closed all inactive accounts. President Chalupsky will follow up on this. District Website: The district website has teacher profiles set up, but we haven't heard anything about it. The district may be asking all teachers to set up websites using the district's system. Deephaven's 4th grade Technology Emersion team has had to use the district's system this year. Their websites have been down for 2-1/2 weeks, and the Tech. Team hasn't fixed the problems. Election Update: The 2003-04 MTA Governance Board will begin their work on May 7, 2003, at the Reorganization Meeting. Linda Morantez will join us as the Building Representative for DEC. Katie Tuthill will join us as the Building Representative for Scenic Heights. MM-East and MHS will have vacancies, as no one has stepped forward to take over for Heidi Johnson and J. Beowulf Boswell. Interested members must contact Julie Anderson-Simonson. |
| Old Business: | Negotiations Report: The MTA Negotiations team met with the district's team earlier this week. The MTA would like to settle by the end of the school year, but this is difficult to do with the short amount of time left. The district's theme is "more with less." The next negotiations session is May 5, 2003. There are concerns about "teachers on special assignment" doing administrative work. This will be addressed at the next Contract Administration meeting. Negotiator Ricke asked that the Building Representatives e-mail him with each building's typical student-contact time per week. MTA Reorganization Meeting: At the Reorganization Meeting on May 7, 2003, the 2003-04 Governance Board will elect the Secretary and Treasurer, and appoint committee chairs. Principals Update: MM-West's new principal will be Bill Jacobson. Scenic Heights will have Linda Crisman as their principal. Groveland's committee would like to start over with new candidates. The MHS committee is doing background checks on the 2nd and 3rd candidates, as the top candidate has pulled out. Many are concerned about the slow-down in communication. |
| President's Report: | Technology--Student Information
Systems: The committee has looked at the Pearson Program. The MTA has
pushed to replace Skyward, and we are well on our way to reaching a
replacement.
Grading Committee: Craig Hintz gave an update at the Meet and Confer meeting. President Chalupsky has asked for a district grading scale to be in place next year as we transition to new policies later. Teacher Evaluation Committee: President Chalupsky and Teachers' Rights Co-Chairs Benson and Otten have been involved in streamlining the TIP process for non-tenured teachers. We need cross-district consistency and training for principals in helping new teachers. Mentoring plays an important role, also. |
| School Board Report: | At the School Board Meeting on
April 10, 2003, the School Board heard Community Comments on the
media para cuts. After a presentation on the MHS artificial turf and dome
proposal, they heard 22 more Community Comments on this issue. The School
Board also approved remodeling the driveway and parking lots at MM-West
and the 2003-04 Budget Adjustments of $680,246.
At the School Board Special Meeting on April 21, 2003, the School Board heard Community Comments on the social worker and media para cuts, and then went into Closed Session. Later, at the end of the Closed Session, the Communication Plan was presented. |
| Motion by Jost, seconded by Goodspeed-Gross, to adjourn. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. | |
|
Respectfully submitted, Mary Tingblad, MTA Secretary 5/5/03, Approved 5/7/03
